Volunteering

Help us make a difference

We always need regular volunteers, especially people who can commit to the same day every week or fortnight (as much as is possible).

Occasionally weekend shifts may become available but we mostly need help on weekday mornings.

Shifts begin at 9am to feed and clean out the cats and rabbits.

For large animals (sheep and pigs) you can arrive up to 9.30am.

Most people do one shift a week.

All shifts are mornings only.

Shifts last a couple of hours but be prepared to stay until lunchtime as animals are unpredictable and so is the weather!

We are fully insured however you will need to be 18 years old or more to volunteer. You also need to have a car or use of a car to reach our site in Horsforth, North Leeds (near the airport) as public transport is not reliable enough around here.

You will be fully trained but due to the amount of training involved we ask for a minimum of 3 months commitment.

It can be a physically demanding role and by completing the application you not only confirm all the content to be truthful, you also accept responsibility for your own health and safety while working with us.

Once trained you will be expected to work on your own in all weathers and be physically fit enough to muck out field shelters, poo pick, feed, clean out cages and sweep up amongst other things.

While we do not expect you to have expert knowledge we do ask for common sense, initiative and the ability to ask questions and keep us informed of any issues that may arise.

Yorkshire Animal Shelter is grateful for any assistance offered, but reserves the right to refuse or terminate volunteering positions without prior notice.
